- Also consider an indoor, coil-shortened dipole. See the ARRL Antenna Book
- for information on shortening dipoles.
-
- Or how about a mobile whip stuck out a window, with a quarter-wave

- I joined the ham section of internet to learn about ham radio and be in
- touch with people who may be able to help me, or exchange information with
- me on ham subjects. We all have out own stories to tell, dont we?
-
- Well, I am getting dismayed with all the items about how expensive amateur
- radio in the US. Radio Shack called Rip-Off Shack? Icom service costs?
-
- What the hell is the matter with you? Want ham radios free? What do you
- think the chips in them radios cost? Nothing.
-
- Hell, a Kenwood TS50S costs $1700 in Europe. You can buy it for less than
- $1000 in the US. A call for three minutes to a manufacturer costs an average
- of $20 here. Shipping, dont even ask. And you americans complain?
-
- Remember that amateur radio manufacurers arent in ham radio for major league
- profit. Icom sells marine radios for two to three times the price of 2 meter
- radios (marine radio is much simpler). Kenwood the same and so is Yaesu.
- They make their money in these so-called commercial rigs.
-
- Granted there are exceptions. AEA, as far as I am concerned overcharges. The
- cost of the bits and pieces of the PK-232 was calculated at $56.75. They
- sell it for $320!!!!!! Thats ridiculous. I am sure there are others like
- that.
-
- However, on the whole, we are associated with an industry where profit is
- not the word you hear often. Look in the pages of QST? How many little
- companies are there trying to offer products for our use. Thousands. No
- other industry sector can offer that, not even computers.
-
- When I started in the Computer business in 1975, the intel 8080 was just
- coming out. The microcomputer industry was just starting. Little companies
- run and owned by dedicated individuals started offering products. Not for
- profit but because they believed their product was better than the
- competition's. By 1990, little companies dissappeared from view in the PC
- industry. Amateur radio still has them, and they will be around for ever.
-
- We should feel happy we live in an industry not run by profit but quality,
- choice and adventure. It has been like this for years and will be like this
- by the year 3000 (assuming the FCC allows it).
-
- So if you want to complain about prices, if you are being overcharged, start
- a forum called "rip-off' and upload messages there, not here.

- So what is the difference from when I learned the code from records/tapes

- There are NO mods for the HTX-202 for extended anything. It ain't designed to

-
- I add bigger battery packs, better antennas, and speaker-mikes to mine. They

- Great radio for a single band, and cheap (relatively) too. I have a pair of them.
